Managing intellectual capital in libraries

CHICAGO — In the knowledge economy, professionals have to make decisions about non-tangible, non-monetary, and largely invisible resources. “Managing Intellectual Capital in Libraries: Beyond the Balance Sheet,” published by Chandos Publishing and available through Neal-Schuman Publishers, presents information professionals with the information they need to understand the potential uses, contributions, value, structure and creation of broadly intangible intellectual capital in libraries.

Author Petros Kostagiolas discusses the significance of managing intellectual capital as a source of innovation in the face of the global economic crisis, outlining practical methods and techniques that can be applied to real-life library situations. His book provides illustrative examples and case studies for exploring and explaining the meaning of specific intangible assets and resources in libraries, such as user-oriented intangible assets, library system automation and technology, library location, human capital, external relations and more.

Kostagiolas lectures in information services management at the department of archive and library science, Ionian University, Greece. He researches and teaches library management, quality and reliability management and research methodology and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham, UK. Co-author of three other books, he has published numerous articles in international journals, and is a regular speaker at conferences.
