Crosswalk connects Common Core State Standards

CHICAGO — The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) provides another tool to demonstrate the school library program’s connection to student learning, with the publication of a new Common Core State Standards crosswalk. The crosswalk connects the AASL learning standards with the Mathematics Common Core State Standards and is available on the AASL website and as a feature of the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner Lesson Plan Database.

The new crosswalk links the AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner with the math standards developed by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). With the publication of this crosswalk, AASL provides another tool for school librarians in states that have adopted the Common Core to utilize in demonstrating the school library program’s connection to these standards. It joins crosswalks for English Language Arts; Reading Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies; Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects; and Writing Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects.

The crosswalk is available in two formats on the AASL website. Users may either search by AASL learning standard or by Common Core State Standard. In addition, the crosswalk is available as a feature of the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner Lesson Plan Database. The database automatically aligns the AASL defined skills, dispositions in action, responsibilities and self-assessment strategies represented in the submitted lesson plans to their corresponding math standard.

To supplement the crosswalk, the AASL website provides school librarians a list of resources, including websites, books and apps that can be used during math instruction. This resource list was compiled by the AASL working group that also created the math standards crosswalk. School librarians are encouraged share other resources helpful to math instruction by leaving a comment on the Web page.

All crosswalks between the AASL learning standards and the Common Core State Standards are freely available to all users and are a part of AASL's national campaign, Leaning4Life. The Learning4Life (L4L) national implementation plan supports states, school systems and individual schools preparing to implement the "Standards for the 21st-Century Learner" and "Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs." Development and maintenance of the crosswalks are supported through AASL membership dues.
