Maxwell’s Complete Handbook for RDA wins 2014 ABC-CLIO Library Publishing Award

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) proudly acknowledges Robert L. Maxwell as winner of the 2014 ABC-CLIO Award for the Best Book in Library Literature for "Maxwell’s Handbook for RDA: Resource Description and Access," published by ALA Editions, an imprint of the American Library Association. This award recognizes books that assist library professionals or information specialists in areas of management, technique and education.

"Maxwell’s Handbook for RDA: Resource Description and Access" provides an in-depth guide to, and analysis of, the use of RDA: Resource Description and Access, the newly developed and adopted international cataloging rules. The book was selected as the award winner for its uniquely thorough, exhaustive approach not only as a manual, but as a detailed explanatory guide. The work captures the nature of the philosophical shift behind RDA as a forward looking vehicle reflecting a new age of cataloging. His book has been described as a “landmark work,” particularly considering the shifting and challenging nature of the development of RDA. Maxwell’s integration of prose, examples of multiple types and extreme attention to detail makes his book invaluable for library students and professionals as a resource that crystallizes the many aspects of RDA.

Robert Maxwell holds an MLS from the University of Arizona and a PhD in classical languages and literatures from the University of Toronto. Currently he is a senior librarian and special collections and ancient languages cataloger in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University and has also taught cataloging at Brigham Young and at the University of Arizona School of Information Resources and Library Science. Additionally, Maxwell has chaired the Bibliographic Standards Committee of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL).

Additionally, Dr. Maxwell holds JD from Brigham Young University. He has also been a voting member of the ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access, the body responsible for developing official ALA positions on additions to and revisions of RDA.
