ACRL 2013 keynote speakers announced, proposal deadline approaches

Geoffrey Canada, Henry Rollins and Maria Hinojosa featured at Indianapolis conference

CHICAGO — The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) will present a celebrated lineup of keynote speakers for ACRL 2013: Imagine, Innovate, Inspire, to be held April 10-13, 2013, in Indianapolis. Be challenged and entertained by ACRL’s three distinguished speakers, who also double as educators, journalists and activists.

Opening Keynote Session, April 10, 2013 – Geoffrey Canada, education reform crusader

In his 20-plus years with Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ), Geoffrey Canada has become nationally recognized for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform. The HCZ Project today covers 100 blocks and aims to serve over 10,000 children. The work of Canada and HCZ has become a national model and has been the subject of many profiles in the media. Their work has been featured on "60 Minutes," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "The Today Show," "Good Morning America," "Nightline," "CBS This Morning," "The Charlie Rose Show" and NPR's "On Point," as well in articles in The New York Times, New York Daily News, USA Today, and Newsday. Most recently, Canada is prominently featured in the Davis Guggenheim documentary "Waiting for 'Superman'."

Thursday Keynote Session, April 11, 2013 – Henry Rollins, punk icon/ activist/ spoken word artist

There are many words that describe Henry Rollins but very few that define him. He’s been called singer-songwriter, punk icon, activist, spoken word artist, comedian, author, poet, publisher, photographer, actor, radio DJ, television host, activist, nomad and raconteur. Rollins famously fronted the California hardcore punk band Black Flag from 1981 until 1986. Following the band's breakup, Rollins soon established the record label and publishing company 2.13.61 to release his spoken word albums, as well as forming the Rollins Band. He has also hosted numerous radio programs and appeared on several television shows, such as "Sons of Anarchy" and his own self-titled "The Henry Rollins Show" on IFC. Rollins has published 15 books, including his latest "Occupants," which is a collection of his photography gathered from his travels around the world to locations as far flung as North Korea, South Africa, Cambodia and Saudi Arabia.

Closing Keynote Session, April 13, 2013 – Maria Hinojosa, Emmy award-winning journalist

For 25 years, Maria Hinojosa has helped tell America’s untold stories and brought to light unsung heroes in America and abroad. As the anchor and managing editor of her own long-running weekly NPR show, "Latino USA," and anchor of the Emmy Award-winning talk show "Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One" from WGBH/ La Plaza, Hinojosa has informed millions of Americans about the fastest growing group in our country. Previously a senior correspondent for "NOW" on PBS, and, currently, a rotating anchor for "Need to Know," Hinojosa has reported hundreds of important stories---from the immigrant work camps in NOLA after Katrina, to teen girl victims of sexual harassment on the job, to Emmy award-winning stories of the poor in Alabama.

Paper, panel, workshop and preconference proposals due May 11

The ACRL 2013 Call for Proposals is currently available. Contribute your ideas and be part of the conference that inspires transformation in libraries, learning and research.
