Kentucky goes 'Beyond Proficiency @ your library'

CHICAGO—Studies indicate that today’s students require multiple literacies—including digital, visual, textual and technological—in addition to information literacy to succeed. In order to guide students down a path toward academic success, the Kentucky Department of Education created Beyond Proficiency @ your library®.

Beyond Proficiency @ your library is a Web-based tool designed to guide school librarians in creating and maintaining effective library media programs for the 21st century. The program reinforces the fact that a well educated, staffed and funded school library can lead to higher student achievement regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community.

Beyond Proficiency @ your library was initially released in 2010 as an update to Kentucky’s previous print-based guide of school library standards.

Guidelines found in Beyond Proficiency @ your library were developed in alignment with the American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner” and have been adopted as a statewide policy. In addition to “Standards for the 21st-Century Learner,” resources in the guide include links to other electronic and print materials developed by AASL, along with Kentucky state guidelines, tips and materials.

The updated guide for the 2011-2012 school year features links to articles on new research, instructional videos, lesson plans, helpful websites and a case study on the value of collaborating with public libraries.

Beyond Proficiency @ your library is also a resource for librarians, with updates to state standards for teachers. For example, Beyond Proficiency @ your library was recently used to provide access to a listing of information and resources for school librarians on the state's new language arts standards so that librarians could better assist classroom teachers in implementing the new standards.

The Campaign for America’s Libraries is ALA’s public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians. Thousands of libraries of all types—across the country and around the globe—use the Campaign’s @ your library® brand. The Campaign is made possible by ALA’s Library Champions, corporations and foundations.
