Real-Life Strategies for Successful Library Job Hunting: A Forum

CHICAGO - Library job hunters face distinctive challenges in today’s market, calling for new approaches. These are addressed in a free Jan. 4, 2012 webinar, “Real-Life Strategies for Successful Library Job Hunting: A Forum.” The webinar is presented by ALA Editions in collaboration with ALA JobLIST and ALA HRDR and is led by Andromeda Yelton and Tiffany Mair, 2010 library school graduates who are both employed after long job searches. In this interactive webinar, they will use polling and questions to the audience to elicit common obstacles in library job hunting and ideas for overcoming them. Attendees will communicate through text in the chat window.



While attendee participation will drive the conversation, Yelton and Mair will offer a few conversation starters, such as:

• Networking online and in-person
• Cultivating your personal brand
• Effective cover letter strategies
• Coping with discouragement
• Limits of geography and questions of relocation

Yelton and Mair are both 2011 ALA Emerging Leaders. Yelton is a member of the founding team at Gluejar, where she works in library outreach, technology infrastructure, usability and communications. She earned a BA in mathematics from Harvey Mudd College, an MA in classics from Tufts and an MLS from Simmons. Mair is supervising librarian, technology for Monterey County (Calif.) Free Libraries (MCFL). She plans and implements learner-focused technology training programs for patrons and staff, helps manage MCFL’s online presence and supports integrated library systems customization. She earned a BA in English literature with a minor in women’s studies from Mills College and an MLIS from San Jose State University.
