Advocacy Institute at Annual to focus on boomers, staff and students as vocal library supporters
CHICAGO – Reserve your spot today for the "Boomers, Staff & Students -- Engaging the Many Voices of Advocacy: An Advocacy Institute Workshop" during ALA’s 2011 Annual Conference in New Orleans. The program will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2011. Advanced registration is priced at $50 and onsite will be $75.
With these three segments of the population inherently understanding the value of the library, attendees will learn how to engage boomers, staff and students to be vocal supporters for libraries and explore ways to mobilize these groups as advocates. Buffy Hamilton, high school librarian, Creekview High School, Canton, Ga. will speak on students as advocates; Carla Lehn, library programs consultant, California State Library, will discuss reaching the Baby Boomer generation; and Pamela Sandlian Smith, director, Rangeview Library District (Colo.), will explain how to empower library staff.
The workshop will also highlight federal legislation and lobbying and how it affects libraries on a grassroots level. Vivian Wynn, chair, Federal Library Legislative and Advocacy Network (FLLAN), will discuss how libraries can get informed and get involved on ways to protect fundamental library values.
