A new guide to sociology and psychology reference

CHICAGO—ALA Editions, the publishing imprint of the American Library Association, announces the publication of “ALA Guide to Sociology and Psychology Reference.” Encompassing versions of traditional indexes, periodicals and scholarly journals, online statistical data sets and websites maintained by a variety of institutions, associations and advocacy groups, this resource thoroughly covers:

  • Sociology reference, including general works; theories, methods and statistics; social conditions and social welfare; and race and ethnicity;
  • Psychology reference, addressing topics such as history and theory; research methodology and statistics; developmental psychology, educational psychology, parapsychology and more.
As the publisher of the essential “Guide to Reference Books,” first printed more than a century ago and known by various editors’ names, including Balay, Sheehy and Winchell, as well as “Reference Sources for Small and Medium-Sized Libraries” and “Fundamental Reference Sources,” the American Library Association has long been a source for authoritative bibliographies of the reference literature for practicing librarians, library educators and reference service trainers. The ALA Guide to Reference series continues that tradition with expertly compiled, discipline-specific, annotated bibliographies of reference works. Under the direction of general editors Robert Kieft (2000–2009) and Denise Bennett (2009–), many librarians have contributed their time and their knowledge of reference literature to this project.
