ALA Council adopts resolution promoting summer reading programs

CHICAGO – The Council of the American Library Association (ALA) has adopted a resolution urging library directors, trustees, school board members and supervising government bodies to provide adequate funding to ensure the maintenance of summer reading programs.

The association is promoting the resolution to all library systems and state boards of education in the country.

In adopting the resolution, the association recognizes the role school and public librarians play in enhancing the reading development of children and teens. Librarians produce summer reading lists to provide learning and recreation. In the process, young library users receive an opportunity to become lifelong readers and learners.

Studies of the reading development of children and teens cite the importance of extensive, successful reading experiences in the development of reading proficiency. These studies include the one conducted by IMLS/Dominican University.
