2005 Tony B. Leisner Scholarship winner named

CHICAGO - The American Library Association (ALA) has announced that Sharon Denise Vaughn-Williams of Oakland, Calif. is the recipient of the 2005 Tony B. Leisner Scholarship.

The $3,000 scholarship, named for Tony B. Leisner, an active ALA member and former member of the ALA Council, is awarded to a library support staff member pursuing a master's degree in library and information studies. The scholarship was established with funds donated by Leisner.

According to Vaughn-Williams, her job with the Oakland Public Library as program leader for the after-school homework assistance program filled her with a sense of satisfaction and purpose that she hadn't experienced in any other position.

Vaughn-Williams wants to work as an outreach children's services librarian promoting collaborative relationships between the public library, the public school system, and the community.

Vaughn-Williams will be attending San Jose State University.
