ALA Personal Membership Types

Memberships run for 12 months starting with the month of your application.  Membership in ALA is required for divisional and round table membership. (Our new, streamlined membership model went into effect in September 2024.)

Librarians and other employees in library and information services or related positions that: (a) require a master’s degree; (b) require a state-level certification; or (c) are managerial.

Dues: $125

Librarians and other employees in library and information services or related positions that: (a) earn <45k annually, including being not currently employed; (b) work outside the U.S.; (c) are retired; or (d) are not listed in Type I.

Dues: $55

Those not employed in library and information services or related activities who, through their personal commitment and support, promote library and information services. Includes Associates, Friends, and Trustees.

Dues: $70

Individuals enrolled in a program for a certificate or a degree in library and information studies. Limited to five years. Certain state library associations (chapters) offer Joint Memberships with ALA for $46. 

Dues: $40

Add Division and Round Table Memberships

Tailor your ALA journey by joining Divisions and Round Tables. Network and collaborate with peers, focusing on your library environment and professional role. A majority of ALA members belong to one or more Divisions. You must be an ALA Member to join ALA Divisions and Round Tables; pro-rated dues apply when adding Divisions and Round Tables to an existing membership.
