Delivered electronically the second Tuesday of each month. 

Library Salary Database (ALA-APA Survey)

The Library Salary Database features salary information from the 2019 ALA-APA Salary Survey. (Responses from a total of 727 libraries reporting for 12,032 positions were analyzed for the 2019 report). Users, who access the database with their institutional ALA ID and password, may search for salary information by position, library type, state and/or region.

ALA Essentials for Library Workers

Library employees at all levels can be more effective and engaged when they are familiar with the basic principles and core values of librarianship, as well as the role of their library within the community. Leveraging unique expertise across the American Library Association and beyond, ALA Essentials for Library Workers is a series of prerecorded training and informational sessions in these areas that can help both onboard new employees and provide important refreshers for current staff. Your staff can add these courses to their existing ALA eLearning account or create a new account today. Instructions for creating an account and accessing the course are below. Please share with your staff.

In four training sessions, your staff can enhance their knowledge and understanding of these crucial library concerns as they learn from experts about:

  • Creating a welcoming environment for patrons with disabilities, presented by the Association of Specialized, Government and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASGCLA)
  • The fundamentals of diversity and tools for creating inclusive environments, presented by the ALA Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services (ODLOS)
  • The essential principles of intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights, plus resources and support, presented by the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF)
  • How to provide excellent customer service—from welcoming new users to the library to tips for handling difficult conversations, presented by Laurie Brown, a customer service expert for more than 20 years

Equip your staff with the essentials that may not yet be part of your HR orientation or ongoing professional development but that can help library employees more fully integrate the unique responsibilities that come with working in a library.

Step 1: Sign In or Create an Account

Sign in to the eLearning Site with your ALA Account by clicking on “Log In” in the top right corner.
To enroll, you must first have an ALA Account. If you have an account, click Login and enter your username and password. If you do not have an account, please create one.

Step 2: Enrolling in the Essentials

Clink the link to the Essentials training below and enter the enrollment key.

After enrolling, you will have access to the courses upon logging in to ALA eLearning site and clicking on the course title. The training will not appear in your list of active courses until you’ve enrolled in the course by entering the enrollment key.

Step 3: Navigating the Essentials

After logging in, clicking on the course title, and (for the first visit) entering your Enrollment Key, you will see the course content. You’ll be able to click on any section to view its contents and navigate to the next and previous sections. Once you enroll, you’ll also be able to find the course on your Dashboard.
