A Guide to the Cartographic Products of the
Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP)

Introduction
This guide was designed for use as a collection development tool by map selectors of depository libraries that participate in the FDLP. The list of cartographic products contained in this guide, were culled from the official semi-annual publication List of Classes produced by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO).Selection Criteria
The selection criteria for cartographic products was based primarily on their 'class title' description which includes: maps; atlases; gazetteers; navigational charts; TIGER files; online mappers; geodatabases; and various other types of geographic related products. As well, some studies and reports that are known to contain cartographic elements have also been included in this guide for example: Soil Survey Reports; Flood Insurance Studies; Gap Analysis Programs; Country Studies; and Area Handbooks.
According to this study, there were 596 cartographic products from the total list of 8894 classes available. That amounts to approximately 6% of government information being distributed through the FDLP in various cartographic formats.
The formats are designated by the letter(s) enclosed in parentheses following the item number. Formats include: (P) for paper, (MF) for microfiche, (E) for Electronic Products (miscellaneous/format unknown), (EL) for online electronic format, (CD) for (CD-ROM), DVD for optical/recordable discs, (FL) for floppy diskettes. Decisions have not been made for all classes, and all decisions are subject to change.
FDLP Updates
