Introduction
This guide was designed for use as a collection development tool by map selectors of depository libraries that participate in the FDLP. The list of cartographic products contained in this guide, were culled from the official semi-annual publication List of Classes produced by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO).
Selection Criteria
The selection criteria for cartographic products was based primarily on their 'class title' description which includes: maps; atlases; gazetteers; navigational charts; TIGER files; online mappers; geodatabases; and various other types of geographic related products. As well, some studies and reports that are known to contain cartographic elements have also been included in this guide for example: Soil Survey Reports; Flood Insurance Studies; Gap Analysis Programs; Country Studies; and Area Handbooks.
According to this study, there were 596 cartographic products from the total list of 8894 classes available. That amounts to approximately 6% of government information being distributed through the FDLP in various cartographic formats.
The formats are designated by the letter(s) enclosed in parentheses following the item number. Formats include: (P) for paper, (MF) for microfiche, (E) for Electronic Products (miscellaneous/format unknown), (EL) for online electronic format, (CD) for (CD-ROM), DVD for optical/recordable discs, (FL) for floppy diskettes. Decisions have not been made for all classes, and all decisions are subject to change.
