Teaching from the Manual While Flying the Plane: Helping Boards Navigate It All
Learn ways to help your boards get up to speed and maintain that learning edge as new executive orders impact this work and their effect on the staff and community.

Description

Many board members (Trustees, Friends, and Foundation) come to libraries with a love for libraries and their community, but few know the work, and they therefore spend their first year or two learning the work on the job. Imagine having to learn this work along with the tenets and principles of librarianship while these same principles are being challenged by new legislative agendas and executive orders. Learn ways to help your boards get up to speed and maintain that learning edge as new executive orders impact this work and their effect on the staff and community.

Learning Outcomes

  • Help boards improve learning opportunities.
  • Build better and stronger onboarding and orientation.
  • Create a toolkit for learning/tackling new subjects.

Presenters

Maura Deedy

Maura Deedy is the founding principal of Local Librarian Consulting, a consultancy focused on supporting multi-type libraries and library-related organizations on evaluation, assessment, strategic planning, governance, advocacy, and director recruitment. Previously, she was the Library Advisory Specialist at the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners and held management roles at Robbins Library (MA) and Weymouth Public Libraries (MA). Her vast experience in public libraries includes training library boards on governance and legal issues, including recruitment, intellectual freedom, and compliance with state laws and regulations.

Marcellus Turner

With a storied career of opportunities, experiences, and learned lessons working in libraries, Marcellus (MT) Turner wants all who meet him to know his passion for libraries as both institutions and open, welcoming spaces for community dialogue. A highly esteemed orator and guest lecturer, MT earned his master's degree in library science from the University of Tennessee and a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi University for Women. Wonder what sparks joy for MT outside of libraries? Sharing his views and vision on the future of libraries and how social consciousness can become a library’s rallying cry at local, state, national, and international conferences. In his spare time, MT is an avid reader who enjoys going to the movies and zoos, having dinner out with friends, traveling, and watching women’s basketball.
