ALA is a voting member of NISO. ALA has delegated responsibility for appointment of the ALA Representative to NISO to Core.
Core appoints the ALA NISO Representative, who will serve a single 2-year term with an option to renew for one additional term.
Responsibilities to Core and ALA
As an official representative from ALA to an outside organization, the NISO representative is expected to:
- Represent and be accountable for the interests of Core by expressing the viewpoint of the Division in discussions related to matters of concern to Core;
- Inform the appropriate Core groups about the work being done by NISO;
- Ensure that the appropriate groups within Core are provided adequate opportunity to review and respond to documents from NISO;
- Submit a written report, including decisions made and actions taken, to the Core Board or appropriate section leadership team as required.
The NISO Representative will post standards to ALA and Core members for review and comment via the Core NISO Feedback, Core Metadata and Collections Section, and ALA Members communities in ALA Connect.
Responsibilities to NISO
The NISO Representative will vote on NISO/ISO standards on behalf of ALA.
The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is a non-profit association accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and it identifies, develops, maintains, and publishes technical standards to manage information in today's continually changing digital environment. NISO standards apply to both traditional and new technologies and to information across its whole lifecycle, from creation through documentation, use, repurposing, storage, metadata, and preservation.
Appointment Process and Timelines
The Metadata & Collections Section Leadership Team and Technology Section Leadership Team will work together to solicit candidates in January of the year in which the NISO Representative's term ends. A candidate recommendation from the two Leadership Teams should include a short rationale for their selection. Once a candidate is identified, the Core Board will vote on the appointment. Upon approval of the Core Board, the new representative will serve a 2-year term as NISO Representative. Overlap with the current Representative will help with a smooth transition.
If for any reason a Representative is unable to complete their term, the two Core section leadership teams will identify and recommend a replacement to complete the term. This person will be eligible for a second term.
