This webinar is a high-level introduction to operational policies, why they need to be assessed on a regular basis, one way of assessment using the 5 W's (who, what, where, when, and why) approach, and the basics of writing or rewriting operational policies.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand what operational policies are and are not.
  • Realize the importance of regularly assessing and revising them.
  • Know the steps and timeline for assessment and revision.
  • Know the steps for writing or revising operational policies.
  • Identify ways to recognize poorly written operational policies.

Who Should Attend

The primary audience for this webinar is librarians, library staff, and library governing and advisory boards responsible for writing, implementing, and assessing operational policies.

Presenter

Dr. John Sandstrom got his MLIS over 30 years ago and has spent most of the intervening time working in Acquisitions, Collection Development and Management, and public services. He has worked in academic, public, and government libraries, as well as doing consultant work for school libraries and spending a few years as a Collection Development Specialist for Baker & Taylor. In every position he has had, he has run up against out-of-date and/or poorly written operational policies.
