Take Action for Libraries Day

Take action: tell Congress to oppose censorship and book bans!

Take Action for Libraries Day is held annually on Thursday of National Library Week, April 23 in 2026. This year, as the right to read is under attack, we're asking library advocates to make their voices heard in Congress.

Contact Congress Now to Support the Freedom to Read!

Across the country, pro-censorship groups have pushed legislation to take away the fundamental right to read that Americans enjoy in the library. Book challenges, bans, and other forms of censorship have risen to record levels. And more legislation is being proposed at the federal level to force censorship onto libraries and their patrons.

During National Library Week - and Take Action For Libraries Day - we want our elected officials to hear us loud and clear: the American people are anti-censorship, oppose book bans, and believe firmly in the freedom to read.

Take action today and tell your members of Congress to oppose book banning legislation like H.R. 7661 and support the right to read. We've made it simple to get in touch with your elected leaders: just use our tool to send your message. And don't forget to share this action and our other National Library Week tools!
