Philip Hall Likes Me, I Reckon Maybe

Beth Lambert is an eleven-year-old with a crush on Philip Hall, the cutest boy in her class in school.  It makes no difference that Philip Hall knows just how to use Beth and connives to get her to do all the dirty jobs he wants to avoid-she likes him!

Betty Green has created a winsome, spunky heroine, who, in spite of her blind spot about Philip, moves toward the realization that "win together or lose together" is a more mature way of facing a race or life.  The feel of place, the rural South, is conveyed partially by the use of speech patterns, which add flavor to the story.
