PHILADELPHIA — Yuyi Morales, illustrator of  “Niño Wrestles the World,” and Meg Medina, author of “Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass,” are the 2014 winners of the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award and Author Award, honoring Latino authors and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in children’s books.

PHILADELPHIA – Susan Roman is the 2014 recipient of the Association for Library Service to Children’s (ALSC) Distinguished Service Award. This prestigious award honors an individual who has made significant contributions to library service to children and to ALSC.

CHICAGO The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has awarded the 2014 Maureen Hayes Author/Illustrator Visit Award to the Keene (N.H.) Public Library.

The award, sponsored by Baker & Taylor, is designed to provide up to $4,000 to an ALSC member library to fund a visit from an author/illustrator who will speak to children who might otherwise not have had the opportunity to hear from a nationally known author/illustrator.

CHICAGO — The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) announced that award-winning author Steve Sheinkin will present the Opening General Session at the ALSC National Institute in Oakland, Calif. This event will take place at the Oakland Marriott City Center on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014 and is sponsored by Roaring Brook Press, an imprint of Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.

CHICAGO – The American Library Association in collaboration with the University of Illinois is creating its own institutional repository (ALAIR).  An institutional repository by definition is a digital repository for collecting, preserving and disseminating the informational, some say intellectual, some research, output of an organization.  The University of Illinois was chosen because of the expertise of its archives and IR staff and that the University currently houses the ALA print archives.

CHICAGO — Children’s and young adult authors, illustrators and publishing groups are waiting in anticipation for the 2014 American Library Association (ALA) Youth Media Award announcements. The ALA will announce 18 awards at 8 a.m. ET on Monday, Jan. 27 from the Pennsylvania Convention Center's Grand Ballroom A,  in Philadelphia.  The awards include the esteemed Randolph Caldecott Medal, Coretta Scott King Book Awards, Michael L. Printz Award and John Newbery Medal.

CHICAGO - The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has awarded 15 libraries mini-grants to start their own Día Family Book Club. These clubs will utilize multi-cultural, multi-lingual or second language books to provide an opportunity for families in  their community to come together. The mini-grants are part of ALSC’s Everyone Reads @ your library grant, generously funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
