NEW ORLEANS – Adriana M. Garcia, illustrator of “Where Wonder Grows,” Claribel A. Ortega, author of “Frizzy”, and Vincent Tirado, author of “Burn Down, Rise Up” are the 2023 recipients of the Pura Belpré Youth Illustrator Award, Children's Author Award, and Young Adult Author Award, honoring Latino authors and illustrators whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in children's books.

NEW ORLEANS — Taryn Beato for Simon & Schuster Audio, producer of the audiobook “Stuntboy, in the Meantime,” has won the 2023 Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production for Children. Melissa Ellard for Weston Woods Studios and Scholastic Audio, producer of the audiobook “The Honeys,” has won the 2023 Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production for Young Adults. The awards were announced today during the American Library Association’s (ALA) LibLearnX: The Library Learning Experience, held January 27-30, in New Orleans.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announced Alexandra Genia of the District of Columbia Public Library, in Washington, DC as its representative in the 2023 Emerging Leader program.

Alexandra Genia is a Children’s Librarian at the DC Public Library where they support partnerships and program development for youth, with a particular focus on accessible and inclusive offerings. In 2021, they graduated with their Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from Drexel University.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), announces that the 2023 Children’s Literature Lecture committee has chosen Dayton Metro Library and the University of Dayton, Ohio, as the site of the 2023 Children’s Literature Lecture featuring writer and illustrator Bryan Collier.

The cohort consists of four dynamic individuals who bring a diverse set of skills and experience to the organization.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) has awarded the 2022 Maureen Hayes Award to the Roselle Public Library District in Roselle, IL. The award, sponsored by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, is designed to provide up to $4,000 to an ALSC member’s library to fund a visit from an author/illustrator to speak with children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to hear from a nationally known author/illustrator.

CHICAGO-The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is offering two online courses this summer: The Newbery Medal: Past, Present and Future, in celebration of the end of the 100th Anniversary of the Newbery Medal, and a brand new course, Reading the Art in Pictures Books.  Both classes are asynchronous and begin July 5, 2022.

CHICAGO — Dr. Jonda C. McNair, Charlotte S. Huck Endowed Professor of Children's Literature, The Ohio State University, Columbus, has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA). 

“I am thankful for the opportunity to serve in this leadership position,” McNair said. “ALSC has given so much to me over the years, and I consider it a privilege and an honor to give back.”
