Frequency of Service on Award or Notable Children's Book Committees
No individual may serve on the Batchelder Award, Caldecott Award, Geisel Award, Newbery Award, Sibert Award, Wilder Award, or Notable Children’s Books Committees more often than once every four years. The four-year period shall begin from the last year of the term of service regardless of length of term. This guideline will not apply to the appointment for Chair. This guideline will not apply to other ALSC committees.
Interpretation of time limitation
The “four year rule” is interpreted like the Olympics.
Take for example candidates appointed to the 2017 award committees (committee would be working and reading books published in 2016). If someone had served on a 2013 Batchelder, Caldecott, Geisel, Newbery, Sibert or Wilder Award or Notable Children's Books committee (reading books published in 2012) or earlier, s/he would be eligible to serve on one of the previously mentioned committees.
Meaning:
- If a member has served on Batchelder within past 4 years, s/he would not be eligible to serve on the Caldecott, Geisel, NCB, Newbery, Sibert, or Wilder Committees. However, he/she could serve on Belpre, Carnegie or Odyssey.
- If a member has served on Caldecott within past 4 years, s/he would not be eligible to serve on the Batchelder, Geisel, NCB, Newbery, Sibert, or Wilder Committees. However, he/she could serve on Belpre, Carnegie or Odyssey.
- If a member has served on Geisel within past 4 years, s/he would not be eligible to serve on the Batchelder, Caldecott, NCB, Newbery, Sibert, or Wilder Committees. However, he/she could serve on Belpre, Carnegie or Odyssey.
- If a member has served on Newbery within past 4 years, s/he would not be eligible to serve on the Batchelder, Caldecott, Geisel, NCB, Sibert, or Wilder Committees. However, he/she could serve on Belpre, Carnegie or Odyssey.
- If a member has served on Sibert within past 4 years, s/he would not be eligible to serve on the Batchelder, Caldecott, Geisel, NCB, Newbery, or Wilder Committees. However, he/she could serve on Belpre, Carnegie or Odyssey.
- If a member has served on Notable Children’s Books within the past 4 years, s/he would not be eligible to serve on the Batchelder, Caldecott, Geisel, Newbery, Sibert, or Wilder Committees. However, he/she could serve on Belpre, Carnegie or Odyssey.
Examples:
- Served on the 2013 Geisel (reading books published in 2012), s/he would be eligible to serve on the 2017 Batchelder, Caldecott, NCB, Newbery, or Sibert committees (reading books published in 2016).
- Served on the NCB committee in 2014, s/he would NOT be eligible to serve on the 2017 Caldecott, but could serve on the 2016 Belpre, Carnegie or Odyssey Committees.
