Talk with Curiosity Creates minigrant recipients at Networking Uncommons - June 25, 2016
Hear from ALSC’s Curiosity Creates minigrant recipients. Programs ranged from bike-building and maintenance at Reading Public Library in Pennsylvania to a sewing program at Kenai Community Library in Alaska that taught participants how to create customized clothing for American Girl Dolls that are in the library’s circulating collection. Grant recipients and others interested in learning about their programs are invited to meet at the Networking Uncommons on Saturday, June 25 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Rasmus Thoegersen, Library Director at Morton-James Public Library in Nebraska City, Nebraska and Curiosity Creates Grant Recipient, will be the point person for the gathering. Curiosity Creates: Research and Best Practices in Creativity Programming for Children
Saturday, January 9, 2016
A room full of participants joined us to engage in a conversation about how libraries encourage children to explore and create through intentional programming and thoughtful use of resources. Erica Fortescue, Associate Director of the Center for Childhood Creativity, shared the latest research from a variety of fields including neuroscience, psychology, sociology, and education. Participants gained an understanding of the seven critical components of creativity outlined by the Center for Childhood Creativity, as well as examples of how to incorporate them into library programming in developmentally appropriate ways for children ages 6 to 14. In addition to timely research, participants benefited from peer-to-peer expertise. Recipients of the Curiosity Creates grant shared updates and lessons-learned. Librarians who are currently implementing creativity programming in a variety of formats described how they got started, the outcome trends they have noticed and the tips they would pass along to others seeking to replicate their programs. Video from Midwinter will be posted when it becomes available.
Curiosity Creates Grants
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is thrilled to announce that of over 400 applications received, the following libraries have been selected to receive up to $7,500 to support creativity programming. We have been amazed by the robust response to our request for proposals and the range of ideas that were submitted will continue to inform our work. The Curiosity Creates grant has been made possible by a generous donation to ALSC by Disney.
