Children's Literature Legacy Award Selection Committee - 2026

Charge

To annually select the recipient of the Children's Literature Legacy Award, established by ALSC to give recognition to an author or illustrator whose books published in the U.S., have, over a period of years, made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.

Composition

The Children's Literature Legacy Award Selection Committee consists of the following five (5) members: Three (3) members to be elected every year from a slate of no fewer than six (6), a chairperson appointed by the president, and one (1) member appointed by the president, serving 2-year terms and led by the committee chair.

*Beginning with the 2025 Legacy Award Selection Committee, all five (5) members will be appointed from the ALSC membership at large.

Established in 1954 or 1955 at the request of the ALSC Board of Directors.

  • Process committees (non-award committees) are appointed in early spring (Jan-May)
  • Award and evaluation committees are appointed in early fall (July-Oct)
  • Replacement positions pop up and are filled throughout the year (ongoing)

The Vice-President/President-Elect begins making his/her process committee appointments in February/March. In August/September, after being seated as President, he/she will then begin filling fall appointments.
