Organization and Effectiveness

Charge

To provide strategic oversight of the division’s organizational structure, ensuring
all member groups are effective, aligned, and sustainable. The committee’s responsibilities include:

  • Structure & Alignment: Reviewing proposals for new committees and task forces to ensure they align
    with the division’s mission, prevent duplication, and possess a clear plan for function and structure.
     
  • Board Advisory: Acting as the primary consultant to the Board of Directors on the creation, revision,
    or discontinuation of committees, and making recommendations on organizational matters affecting the
    division as a whole.
     
  • Operational Support: Serving as a liaison to ALA’s Committee on Organization and providing advisory
    support to priority group consultants and task forces to streamline their work.
     
  • Governance & Compliance: Reviewing division bylaws biennially for alignment with the ALA
    Constitution and Bylaws and ensuring the division’s organizational framework remains healthy and
    transparent.

Composition

The Organization and Effectiveness Committee consists of six members, including two co-chairs who are appointed in alternating years. Knowledge and understanding of division's objectives, organization, and committee structure preferred. (2 Co-Chairs + 4)


Members are appointed from the ALSC membership at large, serving 2-year terms and led by the committee co-chairs.

Vital professional associations are the result of engaged and committed member leaders! If you are interested in serving ALSC on a committee, please read and complete the online volunteer form

  • Process committees (non-award committees) are appointed in early spring (Jan-May)
  • Award and evaluation committees are appointed in early fall (July-Oct)
  • Replacement positions pop up and are filled throughout the year (ongoing)

The Vice-President/President-Elect begins making his/her process committee appointments in February/March. In August/September, after being seated as President, he/she will then begin filling fall appointments.
