Baker & Taylor Scholarship Grants announced

CHICAGO - The Division and Membership Promotion Committee of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), the fastest growing division of the American Library Association (ALA), is proud to announce that Felice Piggott has won the YALSA Baker & Taylor Scholarship Grant for 2006. Piggott will receive a $1,000 grant to attend the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans this summer.

The Baker & Taylor Scholarship is awarded for first time attendance at an Annual Conference. The recipients must be members of YALSA and must have between one and 10 years' experience working with teenagers. Applications are available through the YALSA Web site (www.ala.org/YALSA) and are due December 1 for the following year's Annual Conference.

Felice Piggott is the library media specialist at the Young Women's Leadership School of East Harlem in New York. In addition to maintaining the print collection and the computer lab, Piggott also teaches a technology/research course to all ninth and 10th grade students at the school. Laura Mitchell, assistant principal at the Young Women's Leadership School of East Harlem, notes that Piggott “has created a safe environment for learning where self-reflection, individualism, curiosity and creativity are encouraged and respected,” a place that “has become the heart and soul of the school.”
