Helpful Hints for Developing a Publishable Product

LAYING THE FOUNDATION
  1. Formulate an idea or a topic
  2. Identify potential source(s) for publication and understand the audience for which you are writing
  3. Allow plenty of time to complete the project
-don't underestimate the length of time needed for writing and revision
  4. Familiarize yourself with the copyright laws
FOCUS ON THE FUNDAMENTALS
  1. Prepare an outline
-an outline should be flexible, yet give shape and substance as the work progresses
  2. Set the tone and purpose in the opening paragraph
  3. Stay focussed, make sure the piece answers the basic questions: who, when, where, what, how and why
  4. Be concise, avoid redundancy and the use of jargon or slang
  5. Resist over-generalizing, exaggerating or using superlatives unless they can be substantiated

FINISHING TOUCHES

  1. Make sure the conclusion relates back to the introduction and supports the theme of the piece
  2. Revise rigorously, and proof-read thoroughly
-read the piece aloud; this helps to highlight grammatical and spelling mistakes
-have someone else read the work to provide a fresh approach
-put the piece away for a short time and then return to it for a new perspective
  3. Make sure citations are accurate and complete
