Dear Colleague:

The upcoming annual conference in Washington DC promises to be one of the most exciting -- and well attended -- conferences in ALA history.

I wanted to take this opportunity to personally invite each of you to join us in DC this summer, for hundreds of programs on hot topics affecting libraries of all types, for dozens of special celebrations and events, for a chance to try your hand at lobbying, and for an opportunity to renew old friendships and make new connections with people from all across the country - and world.

With record attendance expected, I also want to assure you that we will have enough hotel rooms for everyone. When you go to make your reservation, however, you may be put on a "wait list". If you are, please don't be discouraged! As seasoned conference-goers know, new room blocks are added on a weekly basis, and the vast majority of attendees who are waitlisted are able to get rooms in one of the hotels of their choice.

Given the number of attendees, it is just not possible for everyone to always get their first choice hotel -- there are only so many rooms available even in the largest hotels. (And, many of the hotels close to the convention center in DC are relatively small.) In every instance, housing staff at 1-800-974-9833 will work with you to find a hotel. ALA hotels that are not within walking distance will be on the ALA/Gale bus routes - and many are also convenient to the extensive Metro system. For instance, we have added a number of hotels in Crystal City, just across the Potomac in Virginia. These hotels are connected directly to the Crystal City Metro Station, a few Metro stops from the convention center - and we will also be providing ALA/Gale shuttle buses to these locations.

For more information about local arrangements and the many exciting upcoming conference events, please visit our Annual Conference site at

And remember that, as always, ALA staff are available to help with any questions or problems. Just call 800-545-2433.

I look forward to a great conference and to seeing you in DC!
