General Travel Information

ITS/ExpoExchange Group is ALA’s travel management company for both hotel and airline reservations. As an ALA attendee or exhibitor, you are eligible for special airline and hotel rates. To reach the ALA travel desk, please call 1-800-974-9833 or 847-282-2529 and identify yourself as an attendee or exhibitor of the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago. The ALA travel desk is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm CST.

Hotel Reservation Deadlines and Information

Hotel reservation requests will be accepted until April 29, 2005, subject to availability. A list of selected hotels and their rates is included in this section. Rates are quoted for the room, not per person, and all rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Special rates are available only when you book directly with the ALA travel desk. All rooms are subject to applicable tax, currently at 14.9% for hotel tax. All requests must include six choices.

Make sure to give accurate dates of arrival and departure for everyone occupying the requested room. Please note that the ALA travel desk does not assume the responsibility of pairing guests for double occupancy or in multiple housing units. After April 29, 2005, the ALA travel desk will continue to make reservations on a space available basis only (i.e., book early to get the hotel of your choice).

Hotel Confirmations, Cancellations or Changes

Confirmation of the room reservation will be acknowledged by the travel desk and sent within 72 hours. If you have any questions regarding your reservation, or to make changes or cancellations, contact the ALA Travel Desk at 1-800-974-9833 or 847-282- 2529, not the hotel. A first night’s room and tax deposit (payable by credit card) is required to hold hotel reservations. Your first night’s deposit is refundable with at least a 72 hour cancellation notification to the hotel, prior to the day of your arrival. Check your confirmation for details on your hotel’s policy.

Dorm Housing Information

If you are looking for a more economical housing alternative, ALA has reserved a limited number of rooms in dorm-style housing through Hostelling International Chicago, located in the heart of downtown Chicago at 24 E. Congress Parkway (just a few blocks north of the Hilton Chicago – a co-headquarter hotel). Hostels do not have all the amenities of a hotel, but it is clean, safe and will have the Gale Thomson Shuttle Bus Service. The deadline for reservations is May 27, 2005.

The HI-Chicago offers the following:

  • Shared accommodations in separate male/female dormitory-style rooms with 6 or more beds, bunk style
  • Towels, linens and pillows provided (please note we do not provide soap or washcloths)
  • Single gender showers and restroom facilities
  • 24-hour access, 24-hour security, and air-conditioned rooms and storage lockers (locks not provided)
  • Self-service kitchen and dining hall with cookware and dishware provided

Beds are $30.25/night, or $34.50/night with continental breakfast, all taxes included. Payment is due when registering.

Cancellations must be received within 48 hours of arrival. After this time, guest will forfeit cost of one night’s stay.

Airline Reservations and Discount Information

The ALA travel desk has negotiated exclusive airfare discounts to Chicago for all ALA members and exhibitors. United Airlines is offering conference attendees and exhibitors a 10% discount off the lowest applicable fare when you book and ticket 30 days or more prior to travel. Save 5% off the lowest applicable fare when you book within 29 days of travel. Applicable restrictions must be met.

To make your airline reservations through the ALA travel desk, call 1-800-621-1083 or 847-940- 1176 Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (outside the U.S. and Canada, call 847-940-1176).

You can also make your reservation directly with United Airlines by calling 800-521-4041 and providing ALA ID# 502CQ to receive discounts. Or visit, and use 502CQ as your E-Certificate number. 

Airport Transportation and Shuttle Information

Chicago is serviced by two major airports – O’Hare International and Midway Airport. For terminal and airline information for both airports, visit To reach downtown from the airports, the Blue Line train is available from O’Hare and the Orange Line train is available from Midway. Fares are $1.75. Taxicabs are available from O’Hare at the lower level curb front of all terminals (by baggage claim). Expect to spend approximately $35 to $40 to downtown. Taxicabs are available from Midway at Lower Level Arrivals, door LL3. Expect to spend approximately $25 to downtown.

Train and Bus Travel to Chicago

Amtrak: numerous Amtrak train routes terminate in or pass through Chicago at Union Station. For reservations or information, contact Amtrak at 800-872-7245 or go online at

Greyhound: all Greyhound buses arrive and depart from the station at 630 W. Harrison St. in downtown Chicago. For information, contact Greyhound at 800-229-9424 or go online at

Rental cars

ALA has negotiated exclusive rates with Avis for rental cars during the meeting. For rates and reservations call 800-331-1600 or access the website for this event at You must mention the Avis Worldwide Discount Number (AWD), D005980, when calling to receive the special discount.

Public transportation in Chicago

Public Transportation in Chicago is quick and easy to use. Chicago has two public transportation options - Metra and the CTA.

Metra Rail: You can get to McCormick Place easily using Metra. The Metra Electric Line runs to McCormick Place, and stops at stations on Michigan Ave. at Randolph/South Water St. and Jackson/Van Buren. Tickets are $1.85 each way. The McCormick Place station is located in the McCormick Place North Building. Be sure to purchase your ticket before boarding the train.

To McCormick Place: Monday - Saturday, Metra trains going to McCormick Place depart the Randolph/S. Water St. Station at approx. 20 after the hour (trains run more often during rush hours). These trains will stop at the Van Buren stop a few minutes later, and arrive at McCormick Place 7 minutes after departing the Randolph station. Be sure to check the train schedule or ask the conductor - not all trains stop at McCormick Place. On Sundays, trains depart from Randolph approx. every two hours.

From McCormick Place: Monday - Saturday, Metra trains stop at the McCormick Place station approx. 51 minutes after the hour most of the day (more often during rush hours). Sundays, trains depart McCormick Place approx. every two hours. All trains that stop at McCormick Place stop at both the Randolph and Van Buren stations.

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA): CTA Trains and buses run regularly throughout Chicago and are a quick and easy way to get around the downtown area. Discounted visitor passes, schedules and fare info is available at Subway and bus fares are $1.75, and $0.25 additional for two transfers within two hours. Transfers are good on both trains and buses.

The “Loop” trains run around the downtown area of Chicago in a loose square, and can be boarded at stations along the tracks. The Red Line subway runs under State Street, and the Blue line subway runs under Dearborn Street. Stations are located every few blocks.

Train and bus maps are available at all train stations. CTA trains do not go to McCormick Place Convention Center.

Most CTA buses include ramps, and some rail stations include elevators. For more information on CTA accessibility, call 312-836-7000.

ALA Shuttle Bus Service - Sponsored by Thomson Gale

Free shuttle buses, sponsored by Thomson Gale, will operate between all participating hotels and the McCormick Place Convention Center during the conference. Complimentary bus service is provided by Thomson Gale. Don’t forget to stop by their booth and say thanks for the lift!

Shuttles will run Friday-Tuesday, between the McCormick Place Convention Center and all ALA hotels. Shuttle bus service schedules (including daily pick-up times, locations and destinations) will be published in Cognotes (the daily show newspaper available during the conference) and will be available onsite.

Discount Bicycle Rentals

For those who wish to travel Chicago by bicycle, discounted rentals are available from Bike Chicago Rentals and Tours, which has three locations:

The discounted rate is $10 per day, which includes the use of a helmet and lock. To receive the discount, just show your ALA Conference badge at the shop.
