Head, Engineering and
Physical Sciences Library

Environment: The engineering and physical sciences library (EPSL) is a branch library of the UM Libraries and is the central location for engineering, physical sciences, and mathematics materials. NATURE OF WORK: The head of EPSL provides administrative leadership, coordination, and accountability for EPSL; plans, organizes, and manages programs and services to meet the requirements of the technologically sophisticated clientele of the branch; develops and nurtures library partnerships with teaching and research faculty, staff, and students, as well as publishers, and information technology experts; and works closely with library staff to modify existing library programs and to develop, implement, and evaluate new programs. Actively participates in services and collection related activities: teaches user education classes, develops and manages the collections, provides in-person and virtual reference service. The head represents the interests of EPSL and shares in the leadership of the division and libraries through participation in library leadership groups. Supervises 5 librarians and 1-3 staff among a total staff of 13.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: REQUIRED: ALA-accredited master's degree in library or information sciences. Subject background in mathematics, engineering, or physical sciences, demonstrated through academic degrees, coursework, or substantive experience. At least 3 years of professional library experience providing reference and instructional services and/or collection development and management in an academic, special, or science library serving similar clientele. Understanding of current and emerging trends in the designated subject areas, including familiarity with electronic journal resources. Understanding of emerging trends in information technologies and collection management. Demonstrated abilities to effectively supervise and creatively work with library staff and both university students and faculty, in a dynamic, rapidly changing environment. Managerial experience that includes supervision of librarians and support staff. Strong commitment to public service. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to meet promotion and permanent status requirements. PREFERRED: 5 years of professional library experience. Advanced degree in engineering, mathematics, or the physical sciences. Experience working in a team-based work environment. Evidence of a consistent record of excellence in professional achievement in librarianship or a related field and visibility, national or international level, as a leader in mathematics, engineering and physical sciences librarianship.
