Winter 2017 Spectrum Graduation Announcements

Photo of Alice Son Alice Son graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Master of Science in Library and Information Science in December 2016. She recently became the Teen Librarian at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library in Arlington Heights, IL where she organizes programs on coding, tech, food, DIY, college prep, pop culture and helping teens resist the lure of so-called ʺfake newsʺ. Alice blogs for YALSA, is a Gryffindor, and you can tweet her @alicehson.

D. Alvarez Tarver headshot

Alvarez Tarver received her Master of Science (MS) of Information in December 2016 from Florida State University. She has also completed a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction through the University of Florida in which she examined how white racial identity and its ensuing supremacy create institutions to serve its needs. Alavrez welcomed her welcomed her first child two months almost to the day prior to graduation on 10/16/16.

Juan Guillermo Garcia received his Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Texas along with the Northern California Cohort at a ceremony on January 28, 2017 at the San Francisco Public Library. He is currently the Library Assistant / Spanish Language Outreach Specialty at the City of Glendale Public Library and serves on the Board of REFORMA Los Angeles as the Public Information Officer.

Kelly Lynn Anders

Kelly Anders recently received her MLS from the University of Missouri. She is currently the Executive Director of the Jackson County Law Library, which serves the 16th Circuit Court of Jackson County and subscribing attorney members. Kelly published her third book, "The Organized Lawyer, 2d," in the fall of 2015.

Maria de Lurdy (Mari) Martinez Serrano received her Master’s in Library & Information Science from San Jose State University in December 2016. On her last week of school, she was confirmed to have become the first credentialed Latina librarian working in a library in the Napa Valley. Talk about overdue! Si se puede!

Meagan Daniels received her Master of Science in Information with a specialization in library and information science in Spring 2016 from the University of Michigan. She is now employed by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission in Austin as a Reader Consultant (Adaptive Tech Specialist). She works at the Texas Talking Book Program, a regional library of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, administered by the Library of Congress. The library distributes books, magazines and other materials in braille and audio to people who cannot read or hold a standard print book.

Missy Solis graduated from San Jose State University with an MLIS in December 2016. She is now a Librarian at San Diego County Library. “ I’m celebrating this milestone and trying my best to work with others in support of social change,” Missy shares. “Spectrum helped me to feel more like I belong. The funding eased some of the burden of pursuing my education, and I am so grateful.”

Nicole Natividad received her Master of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University on December 21, 2016. She currently works for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District (LVCCLD) as the Distribution Center Associate - a newly created position and also just joined the newly created Social Media Team for LVCCLD. "I'm having a blast forging ahead with these new positions! I can say that I am the first - that I made them my own and shaped them for all those who follow after me."

Renee Ting

Renee Ting had a big month in January! She graduated from San Jose State University with her MLIS. She published "Accessibility of Diverse Literature for Children in Libraries: A Literature Review" in the SJSU Student Research Journal. Two weeks ago she began her first job as a full-time children's librarian at the Santa Clara City Library in Santa Clara, California!

Tammeric Itson-Scurry and her degree

Tammeric Itson-Scurry completed her MLIS at Catholic University of America in December 2016. She looks forward to resuming her life and participating in the graduation ceremony in May. She has already received her lovely degree (see inset) and was given an immediate promotion to Children's Librarian at the Southeast branch of the DC Public Library in January.

Tommy Vinh Bui received his MLIS Digital Assets Management from the University of North Texas in August 2016. He also recently made the ascent up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the highest mountain on the African continent and made it back down to sea level with all toes and fingers intact. This endeavor was a longtime aspiration incited by copious readings of Hemingway during the pursuit of the MLIS.
