2016-2017 Spectrum Scholar Mahasin Abuwi Aleem was promoted to the position of Library Assistant at the Oakland Public Library in December. She received the Begun Scholarship, which supports continuing library school students who have demonstrated a commitment to becoming children's or young adult librarians in a California public library, from the California Library Association in November. She also received the Eunice J. Parker Scholarship from the California Librarians Black Caucus Northern Chapter and a Friends of the Oakland Public Library scholarship.
Mahasin is an MLIS student at San Jose State University. She received her A.B. degree in Political Science from Brown University. Before library school, Mahasin taught middle and high school social studies and worked in youth development. She loves working with children and their families and is interested in family literacy, community partnerships, and developing culturally-responsive, participatory library programs.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her family. Mahasin plans to work as a youth services librarian in a California public library, bringing joy and a love of knowledge to all.
