Describe yourself in three words:

Curious, independent, restless.

What are you reading (or listening to on your mobile device)?

I just finished Greek Lessons by Han Kang. One of my favorite books (Human Acts), most hated books (The Vegetarian), and most mid books (We Do Not Part) of all time are all by her, so I was really rolling the dice here. Greek Lessons was intriguing; more poetry than prose. I'm still deciding if that's beautiful or frustrating.

Describe ACRL in three words:

Sharing, collaborating, trying.

What do you value about ACRL?

The people! I've been on ACRL's Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee the last two years focusing on awarding ACRL memberships to library workers and students who identify as BIPOC and/or disabled. My committee members have been amazing, and I'm continually inspired by colleagues across ACRL's network.

What do you as an academic librarian contribute to your campus?

I'm involved in several campus-wide, community-centered projects. The most significant one I've been a part of so far is a $145,000 permanent museum installation that contextualizes the Cherokee language, influences, and features embedded in Western Carolina University’s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center. It is being done in collaboration with members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), whose ancestral homeland is occupied by WCU. It's been a challenging, humbling, and enlightening experience, and I hope to continue engaging with EBCI- and Native-centered projects throughout my work.

In your own words

I love the elastic, multidisciplinary nature of being an academic librarian. I've been able to pursue an MA in History/Cherokee Studies at WCU as part of my role, which has given me profound insight into regional history and contemporary issues that have greatly enhanced my professional and personal development. I've also become more connected to campus partners through my studies and interest in community history. I just finished a month-long archaeological dig of an ancient local Cherokee site – am intense, incredible experience – and am grateful for the wealth of opportunities that come with being part of a university.
