Effective, organized, passionate.
I just picked up Susan Cain's Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole. I've previously read and enjoyed Cain's Quiet, so I have high hopes for this book. I'm also reading The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster aloud to my children.
Connecting, learning, advocating.
Being a part of ACRL has allowed me to connect with other librarians who share my same job duties and liaison areas. (Shout out to the Science & Technology Section!) This wider community has been so empowering and informative, especially as I began engaging with ACRL and STS during the COVID lockdowns. The professional development opportunities provided by ACRL are also valuable to me. I'm grateful I was able to attend and present at ACRL in 2023.
I do a lot of information literacy instruction in my role, and I always want to exhibit authenticity and care to the students. I want them to know that I support them as learners and am always genuinely curious to know what they think. This curiousity extends to my role as a liaison to the School of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering. Despite not having a background in science, I love learning new things about the sciences from my faculty which enable me to do my job better. The Copyright aspect of my job is new, and I'm excited to be able to serve our faculty and College community in a new way.
I grew up thinking I'd be a public librarian, but I'm so glad that I discovered academic library work nearly a decade ago! Getting to work closely with students and constantly learn new things based on their questions is so exciting. Sometimes I describe helping with student research topics - and jumping from one to another - as "mental gymnastics."
