Image Resources Interest Group


To provide a forum for ongoing discussion of the unique issues presented by the development and support of interdisciplinary image resources in academic libraries.

About Us

IRIG activities address members' interests in a range of image-related topics, including: selecting and using subscription image databases, choosing digital asset management and presentation tools, working with images across systems and platforms, supporting faculty research and teaching with images, developing interdisciplinary image collections, collaborating with academic departments and across library units to support image resource development and use, image cataloging and metadata, effective access to image resources through library web sites, visual literacy, image copyright, digital capture, and more.

Image Resources IG Discussion List

Current ACRL Members
All ALA members have an ALA Connect account connected to their ALA login. You are automatically added to your ACRL interest group’s Connect space when you join that interest group as part of  your ALA/ACRL membership.
If you know you are a current ACRL member and cannot access the ALA Connect space for this interest group's page in Connect, you may need to add this interest group to your ACRL membership.  ACRL membership provides complimentary membership for all ACRL Communities of Practice including sections and interest groups.  Please call ALA Member & Customer Service at 1-800-545-2433 ext. 5 for assistance or join online at with any membership questions.

Non-members are welcome to create a free ALA Connect account and have access to numerous resources as well as discussion form viewing privileges. Non-members can post to this community’s list once they create a free account, log in and join the community.

As of August, 2020 the IRIG had 348 members. The Image Resources Interest Group (IRIG) is governed by a Steering Committee that includes a Convener, Incoming Convener, and Past Convener. A fourth IRIG officer is an electronic mailing list/website Administrator. IRIG membership is open to all ACRL members, and we welcome participation from all ACRL and ALA members.

Subcommitees and Task Forces

A Visual Literacy Task Force was established in 2018 to update the original ACRL Visual Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, approved by the ACRL Board of Directors in 2011.


The IRIG began in 2009 at the 2018 ALA Conference the ACRL Board of Directors approved the renewal of the Image Resources Interest Group through June 30, 2024.
