Running for Office

The ALA Nominating Committee nominates candidates from among the general membership for the position of ALA President-elect and Councilor-at-Large. ALA elections are held in the spring of each year with the results announced in early April.

The 2024 ALA Election Period: March 11, 2024 - April 3, 2024. Renew your membership by January 31, 2024 to ensure that you receive your ballot for the 2024 ALA Election.

Nominated Candidates for ALA President-elect & Councilor-at-Large

ALA President-elect & Councilor-at-Large Nominations Period: July 1, 2023 - September 30, 2023.

Interested candidates must submit a candidate biographical form.

Petition Candidates

ALA President-elect & Councilor-at-Large Petition Period: October 1, 2023 - December 31, 2023.

Individuals who did not complete a candidate biographical form during the nomination period or were not selected by the ALA Nominating Committee may run for office by petition. Members who are interested in running by petition may do so by completing a two-step process:

Create an e-petition to collect the required number of signatures

Note: ALA President-elect require at least 200 ALA current personal member signatures. ALA Councilor-at-Large require at least 25 ALA current personal member signatures.
Submit a candidate biographical form
