Resolution Honoring Nasser Sharify
Whereas, The Charter of the American Library states as one of its purposes "promoting library interests throughout the world"; and
Whereas, In 1970 the American Library Association's Library Education Division in cooperation with Pratt Institute and Wayne State University, sponsored an Institute on "International Library Manpower" chaired by Dr. Nasser Sharify, Dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science of Pratt Institute; and
Whereas, As a result of this institute Nasser Sharify established Country Resource Panels within the Library Education Division's Equivalencies and Reciprocity Committee to facilitate the international recognition of degrees from ALA accredited programs and those from other countries; and
Whereas, Nasser Sharify, now Dean Emeritus at Pratt Institute, served on the Country Resource Panels and continued to offer wise counsel to the Association until the Panels were discontinued with ALA Council's appointment of a Task Force to advice on matters of international recognition of library and information studies qualifications; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the American Library Association recognizes the instrumental role that Nasser Sharify has played in stimulating awareness of the global community of librarianship and in promoting a diverse, highly-qualified professional workforce for America's libraries; and be it further
Resolved, That the American Library Association expresses profound appreciation to Nasser Sharify for his extraordinary and exemplary service to librarianship.
