Donate to ALA to help fight censorship.
Libraries across the country are experiencing an unprecedented spike in censorship attempts with a focus on books that address the voices and lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
This Giving Tuesday, we are asking you to help protect the freedom to read.
The need has never been greater. As Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom said recently, “I've worked at ALA for two decades now, and I've never seen this volume of challenges come in. The impact will fall to those students who desperately want and need books that reflect their lives, that answer questions about their identity, about their experiences that they always desperately need and often feel that they can't talk to adults about."
Many of these censorship efforts aim to criminalize the essential functions that librarians perform every day and have already served to limit or restrict reading access.
ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom provides confidential professional and emotional support for library professionals facing challenges. And the demand for their services has never been higher. Reports of censorship were up 60% in September 2021 over the previous year, and the office provided support for 120 library workers facing censorship challenges this summer.
ALA actively advocates and educates in defense of intellectual freedom—the rights of library users to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment. But we can’t do that without your help.
Now, more than ever, your support matters.
Your gift will go to work right away. Make a tax-deductible donation today.
The American Library Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
