Year-end Giving 2021

Libraries across the country are experiencing an unprecedented spike in censorship attempts with a focus on books that address the voices and lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

We need your help to fight censorship.

This has been a year for the books. Never before has ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom tallied more censorship attempts, nor have libraries experienced such assaults on the freedom to read.

Across the country, people are attempting to ban books that address the voices and lived experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

But we can’t let them win.

GIVE NOW

The need for your support has never been greater. As Deborah Caldwell-Stone, director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom, said recently, “I've worked at ALA for two decades now, and I've never seen this volume of challenges come in. The impact will fall to those students who desperately want and need books that reflect their lives, that answer questions about their identity, about their experiences that they always desperately need and often feel that they can't talk to adults about."

Your gifts will be immediately put to use as we advocate and educate in defense of intellectual freedom — the rights of library users to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by the First Amendment. Intellectual freedom is a core value of the library profession and a basic right in our democratic society. We believe — and you agree — that a publicly supported library provides free, equitable, and confidential access to information for all people of its community.

There were more censorship attempts reported to ALA in the last three months than in alll of 2020. Biracial boy reading a book

Many of these censorship efforts aim to criminalize the essential functions that librarians perform every day and have already served to limit or restrict reading access.

Now, more than ever, your support matters

Your gift will go to work right away. Make a tax-deductible donation today.
