Description & History

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is a global movement dedicated to raising awareness about environmental protection, sustainability, and climate action. Established in 1970, the event was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin, who was inspired to mobilize public consciousness about air and water pollution.

The first Earth Day saw participation from approximately 20 million Americans who demonstrated in support of environmental reform. Earth Day became an international event in 1990 thanks to efforts led by Denis Hayes. The signing of the historic Paris Agreement on Earth Day in 2016 further established Earth Day as a global event.

Today, Earth Day is recognized worldwide, celebrated by more than one billion people annually across nearly 200 countries. Activities range from local clean-ups, educational workshops, and tree-planting events, to global advocacy campaigns addressing pressing environmental challenges.
