ALSC to support presidential Emerging Leaders initiative

CHICAGO - The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has announced its support of the Emerging Leaders 2007 initiative. ALSC will provide stipends of $500 per conference to one selected applicant to attend the Emerging Leaders curriculum designed by ALA President Leslie Burger.

Burger launched this new initiative to "enable 100 new librarians to get on the fast track to ALA and professional leadership" and enrich the association's incoming volunteer base with practical skills and applicable knowledge.

Emerging Leaders 2007 will select and train 100 new librarians to get a jump-start in leadership.  The initiative will kick off with a day-long session during the 2007 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, and it will grow and develop virtually for six months, culminating at the 2007 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

"ALSC will always need leaders and this sounds like a marvelous opportunity for professional growth," said ALSC Division Councilor and Past President Linda Perkins of the Berkeley Public Library in Berkeley, Calif.

More information about the Emerging Leaders 2007 initiative and instructions on submitting an application can be found at Leslie Burger's Web site: http://lb.princetonlibrary.org/emerging_leaders.html.

The applicant selected by ALSC will be guaranteed acceptance into the program. Applicants wishing to seek financial sponsorship from ALSC should send a copy of their application to Executive Director Diane Foote, Association for Library Service to Children, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, IL   60611; e-mail dfoote@ala.org; or fax 312-280-5271. Applications must be received by September 15.  Applicants will be notified by September 22.

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is a network of more than 4,000 children's and youth librarians, children's literature experts, publishers, education and library school faculty members, and other adults committed to improving and ensuring the future of the nation through exemplary library service to children, their families, and others who work with children.
