Soft Serve: Using Soft Skills to Enhance Communication with Colleagues & Improve Service to Teens

Teen library workers are passionate about serving teens and often we can't understand why our colleagues and managers don't “get it” when it comes to teen services. This webinar will help teen services library workers deliver a positive teen service message to colleagues, managers and administrators with the goal of cultivating a teen-friendly service landscape. Jennifer Velasquez teaches participants real-world strategies that Teen Services library workers can employ for tackling common situations with even the most ‘teen resistant’ colleagues – and all without alienating themselves in the process.

Takeaways

  • Differentiate between soft skills and hard skills
  • Identify soft skills that characterize and are critical to relationships in the workplace
  • Teach colleagues that all library workers play a role in connecting with teens in the library

Who Should Attend

  • Teen services librarians

Plug-Ins

Adobe Connect runs off a Flash platform.  Meeting participants need to set their computer settings to allow plug-ins.

Audio

Audio for Connect meetings is provided using VOIP. Meeting participants need to have a computer headset with microphone.  Microphones and speakers that are built into computers are usable, but if they are used then other webinar participants in Connect will actually be able to hear people speaking through the computer's speakers as well as through the microphone of the person speaking, which creates an echo or makes the sound quality fuzzy. Here are some better options to explore:

  • YALSA staff use this for webinars:  http://tinyurl.com/34vueqz
  • If you have a head set you use with your phone, this may work, but you’ll want to test it out prior to any official webinar to be sure.
