2005 Popular Paperbacksfor Young Adults

The Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults Committee, sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) of the American Library Association (ALA), announced its 2005 selections finalized at the ALA Midwinter Meeting, held January 14-18 in Boston. This year’s committee produced four lists of selected titles. This year’s lists are:

  • Read ‘em and Weep : Get out your hankies! Here are stories of teens struggling to overcome loss, love, and life’s disappointments. Committee Chair Walter Mayes offers this list “for when teens want something heart-wrenching.”
  • Own Your Own Freak : Feel like life has shut you out? You’re not the only one, Committee Chair, self-proclaimed freak, and freak advocate Michele Gorman says. “If you’ve got it, flaunt it!”
  • Gateway to Faerie : This list has retellings and original tales that capture the essence of the fantastical, magical world of faerie. Eunice Anderson, Committee Chair, recommends teens to “leave reality behind and cross over into the place called Faerie.”
  • All Kinds of Creepy : Lots of things scare us…ghosts, vampires, serial killers, and more. The books collected on this list share one common theme: they are tales guaranteed to make your spine tingle! Chair, Sarajo Wentling wanted to comment but was too busy cowering under the table in fear.

Committee Chair Sally Leahey, commented, “I expect that this year’s titles will be grabbed up by teens and librarians. The topics have wide appeal, and titles were chosen for their popularity to promote reading for enjoyment among teens. Committee members did a terrific job of carrying on the tradition of the Popular Paperbacks Committee, which marks its tenth anniversary this year.”
