The WNBA Eastman Grant

Background

This grant is known as the WNBA Eastman Grant. It is named for Ann Heidbreder Eastman, who was an active member of both the Women's National Book Association (she was a past national president) and the American Library Association (she was a member of the ALA Publishing Committee, the ALA Council, and she held many other association positions, including the presidency of one of ALA's divisions, the Library Administration and Management Association). The grant honors Ann's commitment to education about publishing as well as her support of communication between librarian and publishers.

The purpose of the grant is to help provide funds for a librarian to take a course or to participate in an intensive institute devoted to aspects of publishing as a profession. (This would not include courses, institutes, seminars or workshops devoted to desktop publishing for purposes of setting up a newsletter or an individual home office.)

Librarians holding the MLS or its equivalent master's level credential and having at least two years of post-master's work experience in a library are eligible to apply. Criteria for selecting the winner include the assessment of the likelihood of career benefit to the person taking the course.

Funding, Frequency, and Size of Grant

One grant is to be funded annually by the WNBA. If a suitable candidate is not found, the grant will not be presented that year. The monies raised for the grant remain in a WNBA-administered account, from which the interest accrued will provide for the grant and its administrative costs each year. The size of the grant will be up to $750 annually.

Administration of the Grant

The grant is to be administered by the ALA Publishing Services Department and the ALA Publishing Committee.

Procedures and Deadline for Grant Applications

Each applicant must provide:

  • A current résumé
  • A personal statement of not more than 300 words concerning an ongoing interest in the publishing process and how a better understanding of this process would enhance the applicant's library career.
  • A list of the publishing course(s) to which the applicant would apply.
  • A signed acknowledgment of intent to submit to ALA and the WNBA a simple report and verification of attendance at the chosen publishing course.

Grant applications must be received by November 1, 2008, so that the grant winner can be announced at the 2008 ALA Midwinter Meeting.

Donor of the Grant

The donor is the Women's National Book Association.
