Trustee Academy Courses for Utah Libraries & Trustees

Trustee Basics, Part I covers the role of the Trustee in the community, who speaks for the Trustees, governing vs. advisory boards, holding effective board meetings (getting consensus, open meeting laws, parliamentary procedure, etc.), and board self-assessment. This course is led by Lynn Stainbrook, director of the Brown County Library in Green Bay, Wis.
Trustee Basics, Part II covers understanding and setting policy, understanding and supporting intellectual freedom and patron privacy, meeting state standards, Trustee liability and fiduciary responsibilities, considering D&O insurance, and Trustee ethics. This course is also led by Stainbrook.
Advocating for Your Library covers sowing the ground with excellent public awareness and great service, how to design an advocacy campaign, collaborating with stakeholders such as Friends and patrons, and implementing the campaign. This course is led by ALA past president Carol Brey-Casiano, Information Resource Officer for the U.S. State Department and former director of the El Paso Public Library System.
Evaluating the Library Director covers understanding the importance of an annual evaluation of the library director, planning to evaluate, methods of evaluation, tools and other approaches, additional considerations, and avoiding common problems. After taking this course you will feel empowered to take control of the director evaluation process and tailor it to your library situation. This course is led by Sarah Ann Long, Professor of Practice and Coordinator of Continuing and Professional Education at Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science in River Forest, IL.
In Working Effectively with Your Library Trustees, led by United for Libraries Executive Director Sally Gardner Reed, learn tips and strategies for working effectively with your Trustees. Topics include orientation for new Trustees, understanding roles, meetings, emergencies, and effective communication. Originally presented live April 9, 2013.
Tips for Logging In
To log in, you will need the login and password you received from the Utah State Library or United for Libraries. If you have any problems logging in or need the username/password, please email Beth Nawalinski at firstname.lastname@example.org. E-mails are checked evenings and weekends for quick response time. A few notes and tips to help you log in smoothly:
- Please look in the top right corner of this screen now. If it says "Login" then click that link and when prompted enter the login and password provided to you. You will be redirected to this page and can then click on any of the course titles. Alternatively you can click on the course titles in the body of this page above and you will be prompted to login.
- If the upper right corner of the screen says, "Logout" and you are currently logged in with a different login (personal or group member login), please first click "Logout" and close your browser completely to complete the logout process. You cannot be logged into your personal or group member website access and the Trustee Academy at the same time. Once you have returned to this page in a new browser window you can click "Login" and enter the login/username and password provided to you.
- If you do not know the login and password, please e-mail email@example.com to request the login. Provide the name of your library and request the login to the Trustee Academy. E-mails are monitored evenings and weekends and you will receive a reply quickly. If during business hours you may call our office at (800) 545-2433, ext. 2161.
- Once you have logged in to view a course you can access additional courses without logging in again during the same visit to this website. If you are an ALA member or United for Libraries group member and wish to access other member benefits you will need to first "logout" in the upper right of any screen and then login again using your personal or group member login. The Trustee Academy login provides access only to Trustee Academy courses.
NOTE: The Utah State Library has renewed one year of access (through October 2014) to the above three Trustee Academy courses. Any Utah Trustee or library staff member who would like to complete the two additional courses in the series (Working Effectively with the Library Director and The Library's Budget) may upgrade for a small fee. Please contact Beth Nawalinski at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to upgrade and add these additional courses.
