Nominating Committee

Committee Charge

To promote and publicize leadership opportunities in United for Libraries. To prepare a slate for open positions for United for Libraries Board approval and inclusion on the ALA election ballot.

Minimum Expectations

  • Solicit recommendations and nominations for open Board positions.
  • Meet at Midwinter Meeting to discuss possible nominees.
  • Obtain permission from all nominees considered for office to be placed on ballot.
  • Meet at Annual Conference to finalize slate of at least one person for each open position to be presented at the Annual Conference board meeting for approval.
  • Ensure that all nominees complete the ALA forms necessary for placement on the ballot by ALA deadline.

The Nominating Committee meets in person during the ALA Midwinter Meeting, and if needed during the ALA Annual Conference. Conference calls may be scheduled by the chair as needed.

Conference Calls: At the request of the committee chair, one or more conference calls can be scheduled with the assistance of United for Libraries staff.

ALA Connect: Each committee has a virtual "space" in ALA Connect where committee members can post messages and share documents among committee members. This option should only be utilized if all committee members agree to using ALA Connect as their primary means of communication.


The Nominating Committee must present a slate of candidates to the United for Libraries board for approval during the ALA Annual Conference. This slate of candidates, if approved by the board, will appear on the ALA/United for Libraries election ballot the following spring. The 2016-2017 Nominating Committee will be seeking candidates to appear on the 2018 spring ballot; those elected take office after the 2018 ALA Annual Conference.


The chair will complete a report for each meeting and submit to the staff liaison, to include a sign-in sheet.
