Awards Committee

Committee Charge

To assess and recommend to the board winners of various awards and grants issued by United for Libraries throughout the year.

Minimum Expectations

  • Work with staff to publicize opportunities for awards.
  • Meet at Midwinter Meeting to review applications.
  • Recommend winners for each award in consideration, and submit to the United for Libraries Board for approval.
  • Notify winners.
  • Meet virtually or by conference call as needed.

Meetings

The Awards Committee meets in person during the ALA Midwinter Meeting to review award applications and recommend winners for approval by the United for Libraries board.

Communications

Email: The email address to use for contacting committee members is united-awards-17@lists.ala.org. Only committee members and staff liaisons can post messages to the electronic discussion group.

Conference Calls: At the request of the committee chair, one or more conference calls can be scheduled with the assistance of United for Libraries staff.

ALA Connect: Each committee has a virtual "space" in ALA Connect where committee members can post messages and share documents among committee members. This option should only be utilized if all committee members agree to using ALA Connect as their primary means of communication.

Timeline

Award applications for the ALA Trustee Citation, the United for Libraries/SAGE Academic Friend Conference Grant, and the United for Libraries/Thrift Books Friend Conference Grant are due December 15. Committee members are encouraged to promote the award.

The committee meets at Midwinter to review nominations and applications, and to recommend winners for final approval by the United for Libraries board.

The committee notifies winners.

Reporting

The chair will complete a report for each meeting and submit to the staff liaison, to include a sign-in sheet.
