Pivot or Persevere? Creating a Framework for Successful Innovation

Changes in libraries are creating the need to embrace innovation in library structure, program and service development, and community engagement. This can be overwhelming, but what if there was a simple way to start small before deploying extensive time and money on solutions that may or may not work? In this intensive, hands-on session, you’ll use Lean Start Up principles, design thinking and deep customer understanding to identify and validate problems, and develop and test solutions. Through an iterative process, learn to pivot or persevere as you bring the best solution forward. Library of the Future – Think Better: Attention in Education with Steelcase

Given what we know about how the brain works, how can we maximize student attention and - by extension - improve student success? New research and insights into the neuroscience of attention can help us design spaces that minimize distraction and help students gain and keep attention. These spaces recognize students' diverse backgrounds, skills, hopes and dreams and prepare them for the moving target of a creative economy and jobs that often don't even exist yet. As educators and educational spaces compete with technology and its attendant interruptions, a focus on conducive spaces is more important than ever.

Library of the Future – Top Tools for Changemakers

Design thinking and lean startup systems are rich in low-tech tools for changemakers. Simple techniques such as affinity mapping, decision matrices, and prototyping can be used by any library staff person for the discussion of new ideas, to spark creativity, or to rejuvenate existing programs. Session facilitators will explain how the tools work and share examples of how they have been useful in a library setting. The session will end with 30-minutes of hands-on practice with librarian-coaches. Co-sponsored by the Library Entrepreneurship & Maker Services MIG and the Center for the Future of Libraries.

Using Dr. John Kotter's renowned 8-Step Process for Leading Change - and its core principles - as a backdrop, session participants will have the opportunity to work with colleagues and Kotter International to answer the questions: Where am I in the process of leading change, and what do I need to be doing now to move my library into the future?

Learn more about the issues civic and social innovators are addressing and the strategies they are employing. These innovations can inspire our efforts to help libraries transform. Sessions are designed for individuals' busy meeting schedules - each day will feature three presentations and attendees are encouraged to drop in as their schedules allow.

News You Can Use: New Visions for Academic Library Spaces

Following a 2011 Learning Commons renovation focused on refreshed study spaces, a new adaptive plan developed by UMass Lowell Libraries and the architecture firm Perry Dean Rogers is shaping the library's future space by examining functional services and programming. New faculty partnerships support curating book collections but also explore shared, integrated, hoteling spaces and active participation in traditional library services. New advocates are being found through university administrators. And students increasingly play a role as change agents for services. An architect and librarian will share information about the process for this planning and insights from the work they have completed.

An Innovation Workshop for Library Entrepreneurs and Makers (and Librarians Who Support Entrepreneurs and Makers)

Based in the Lean Startup methodology, Design Thinking, and Participatory Action Research, this workshop will walk participants through a proven process of innovation and idea testing that can be applied to organizational development, professional learning, new programs and initiatives, and more. Participants will explore how to develop and test a "venture" idea over the course of the workshop and engage in hands-on practice with tools they can use to continue to innovate using lean startup and design thinking methodologies with minimal resource investment. Library of the Future – Learning from the Participatory Library at Cedar Rapids Public Library

In June 2008 a destructive flood swept through the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the wake of the flood, a visionary group realized that the silver lining to the story was the opportunity to radically re-imagine the role a library could play in the life of the community. The focus was on creating a space that, in the words of the library director would be “more like an Apple Store than the DMV.” The new Cedar Rapids Public Library opened in August of 2013 and the impact of that design decision has been astonishing. Before the flood, the library saw 11,000 annual visitors come through the library for meetings and special events. In contrast, during the first year of operation, the new library hosted 102,000 visitors and is on track to host 150,000 people in 2015.  This panel discussion between library staff and the design team from OPN Architects will address the philosophy that drove the development of the new library, the design choices that were made and take a candid look at the results.

Dr. Daniel Russell, library advocate, user, and Senior Research Scientist for Search Quality & User Happiness at Google, will share his thoughts on the future of libraries, online question asking, information search and retrieval. Russell’s work focuses on understanding how searchers think of online content, exploring how they search and what they consider search success and failure. Library of the Future - Learning with the Long Now Foundation

The Long Now Foundation promotes long-term thinking by bringing together a diverse network of individuals in conversation and in pursuit of several long duration projects. Their 10,000 Year ClockRosetta Project language library, and Manual for Civilization encourage individuals to stretch their sense of "now" and bring long-term thinking and responsibility into the everyday decisions that are made. And their new space, The Interval, provides a venue for learning and conversation about big ideas. On the Horizon: Pressing Technologies, Trends, Challenges for Libraries

How can libraries remain relevant in a Google and Wikipedia world? How can they better foster interdisciplinary research? To effectively foster information discovery and implement emerging technologies, library professionals need timely research and analysis to aid their strategic planning. In this presentation, Samantha Adams Becker, the New Media Consortium's lead writer/researcher of the NMC Horizon Report series and the recent NMC Horizon Report > 2014 Library Edition, will take a five-year view to explore the future landscape of academic and research library technology use, along with the trends that are advancing it and the challenges that are impeding it. Each topic discussed will be framed by examples of technology and creative strategies being successfully leveraged in libraries across the world.

Summit on the Future of Libraries
Libraries From Now On:  Imagining the Future
May 2-3, 2014

The Summit brings together thought leaders from the library community, from a broad spectrum of educational organizations, federal agencies and foundations that work with libraries to begin a national conversation about the future and libraries. The Summit was organized as an initiative of 2013-2014 ALA President Barbara Stripling. A report from the Summit is available.
