This program is based on Google’s CS First Music & Sound club curriculum and has been customized by Homer (AK) Public Library for a week-long coding camp to introduced kids ages 8-11 to basic computer science concepts while they create digital music, sound and video. Library staff worked with a music educator to deliver the program content.
CS First offers a pre-packaged curriculum that can be used as is or as a framework for a more customized program. While program leaders do need a basic understanding of CS and CT concepts to successfully use this curriculum, the content includes all of the necessary pieces for library staff with limited experience to teach basic computer science in an informal learning setting. Along with the instructional videos, behind the scenes club management tools, suggested lesson plans with sample projects, and an almost seamless connection to the well-known Scratch programming platform, CS First also provides a physical kit with fun tangible materials for participants to help them extend learning beyond the program.
