Looking Back ... and Forward

[We're departing from our usual format to hear from Emily Johnson, a student at the University of Michigan School of Information.  Emily joined the ALA Library staff for a week, attracted by a project to bring one of our special collections under bibliographic control.  Years ago, the staff in ALA's publishing department began an archive of each book or other item published by ALA.  This collection, which is strictly an internal resource (and partially duplicated at the ALA Archives), is under the Library

Reader's Advisory

This post isn't prompted by just one question, but rather several that came in via e-mail over the weekend.  Can you suggest good books for my 8 year old grandson?  Where are the older lists of Best Books for Young Adults? Is there a set of biographies of all the presidents? So, even though the ALA Library is a special library, we get our share of readers advisory (RA) questions!

Awards trivia

What is the oldest award ALA gives?  Who are all the recipients of the Margaret Mann Citation?  When did publishers start sponsoring ALA awards?

Bibliotherapy

Q. I'm finishing up my first year of library school and I've gotten interested in bibliotherapy. How can I learn more about this specialization?

ADA and Libraries

ALA's Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA, a division of ALA) maintains resources on libraries and ADA, the Americans with Disabilities Act; see the excerpt from ALA Library Fact Sheet 11 - Building Libraries and Library Additions: A Selected Annotated Bibliography at http://www.ala.org/tools/libfactsheets/alalibraryfactsheet11 --

ADA -- Americans with Disabilities Act.

Marking Discards

Q. I recently purchased a used book online. When it arrived, it appeared to be a library book, but it contained no indication that it had been discarded or withdrawn. Is it common for libraries to discard books without indicating on the books that they have been withdrawn from the collection? How can average book buyers know that they are not purchasing stolen property?

Support for Our School

Q. I'm a part time school librarian, in a rural area.  The local PTO would like to help me gain more funding for our school library. Do you have any ideas or resources I can share with them?

Budgeting for a Library Building

Q. Our town's library is bursting its seams, so we're beginning the exploration for a new one.  Is there any place we can look for the cost factors we need to consider?

Starting a Library

Recently, a reader of our I Love Libraries website sent over an inquiry about setting up a library in her community.  According to the IMLS  report, Public Libraries in the United States: Fiscal Year 2008 (most recent in the series), all but about 2% of the U.S.

Political activities

Q. I am a high-school senior working on a school project in which we must write an extensive paper on a special interest group of our choice. I've always been interested in being a librarian, so I chose the American Library Association. Your website has been helpful, but I don't see any information on the ALA interaction (or impact) on recent congressional or presidential elections. Where should I be looking?
