ILL Committee Liaison Report--British Library Document Supply Center

BLDSC report for the ILL Committee
ALA June 2002

1. From 6 June we will be releasing a new version of the British Library Public Catalogue. This will be Z39.50 compliant. Users will then be able to search the Catalogue simultaneously with other Z39.50 databases.

The BLPC provides free access to most of the British Library's collections, and includes the BLDSC's serials, monographs and conferences files. Earlier this year we added records for the half million pre-1950 books held by the BLDSC. These had previously been accessible only through a card catalogue. To search BLPC go to http://blpc.bl.uk/. BLPC also contains records of our British doctoral thesis collection: go to www.bl.uk/britishthesis for further information.

2. We now have the capability to scan from microfiche and microfilm and transmit the copies via Ariel. The quality of the copies obviously depends largely on the quality of the microform originals, which can be very variable, but generally the results are very good.

We have a very large collection of material in microform, from millions of reports produced by national and international organisations to hundreds of microform research collections covering a wide range of subjects. Full details can be found on the Document Supply pages on our web site: www.bl.uk/dsc.

3. Unfortunately from June we are closing our Patent Express service. Recent developments in patent information mean that the vast majority of patent documents can be obtained from many other sources and often more cheaply (in some cases for free). The service closure will enable the Library to concentrate resources on developing other services.

4. The savings produced by automating many of our systems and procedures has allowed us to keep our prices unchanged for many years. Unfortunately, costs in other areas continue to rise and we have had to raise our prices from April. The price of a copy has gone up by 50c to $12.00. However, for the time being we are maintaining the introductory discount of $1.00 for IFM requests. The price for an IFM copy is now $11.00. Loans now cost $21.60.
